Monecia R. Thomas is the director of the Emerging Leaders in Public Health and the Management Academy for Public Health programs at the North Carolina Institute for Public Health (NCIPH).
Ms. Thomas earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Science Education-Biology from North Carolina State University and a Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health.
She taught high school biology for seven years within the public education system and the Department of Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After leaving the education profession and receiving a Masters degree, she entered the field of healthcare administration.
Previously Ms. Thomas was an Administrative Fellow at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Northern Virginia where she was responsible for managing and presenting a safety initiative for over 6,000 hospital employees and for assisting in the development of the strategic evaluation and implementation process for a new neuroscience procedure.
Thomas joined the Institute in 2006 as Senior State Accreditation Coordinator for the North Carolina Local Health Department Accreditation program. She was responsible for a broad range of duties, including creating strategies for the RWJ Foundation-funded Multi-State Learning Collaborative project, supervising accreditation site visits, marketing the program, and developing and leading training sessions. In addition, she co-authored an article for the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice, entitled "Accreditation/Performance Assessment On-Site Reviews in Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, and Washington: Implications for States and an Evolving National Model".
In November 2007, Ms. Thomas accepted the position of Director within the Executive Education Department of the North Carolina Institute for Public Health.
