Managing in Turbulent Times: Emerging Leaders in Public Health

Success Stories

Emanuel FinnAfter spending a week of onsite intensive work at the University of North Carolina Paul J. Rizzo Center at the Chapel Hill campus, I came away with the powerful emotion that the Emerging Leaders in Public Health (ELPH) fellowship program is all about cultivating effective leaders to work and manage in turbulent times. By weeks' end, the positive, motivational and up-beat experience had propelled me to adopt a plan to hone in on my leadership skills. Upon my return to my job, I began implementing my ideas and actions in a more sophisticated and systematic way. In the subsequent weeks and months that followed, I found myself constantly improving and consistently performing at peak levels. The result was enhanced overall job performance and professional satisfaction.

The program's curriculum of fireside chats, team simulation experiences, individual development plan, the frequent action learning and peer coaching conference calls and the team projects, have helped immensely in my professional and personal growth in the work place. The ELPH program enhanced what I needed to know about business and management strategies and practices in a very fundamental way. Six months after the fellowship began, my job title has changed from Oral Health Program Manager at the DC Department of Health in Washington DC to Chief, Oral Health Division. I attribute this promotion to some of the invaluable lessons I learned during the fellowship. The experience, which I came away with hasn't only made a difference in my professional career, but it has also left an indelible mark on me.
